Most of our customers purchase their brand-new deck because
they want to spend more time outdoors with family and friends. In addition to
choosing a deck that is safe, attractive, and functional, you also want to make
sure that your deck area is comfortable and inviting. Here are a few tips for
decorating your new outdoor space.
1.) Choose outdoor furniture that is both comfortable and weather-proof - Wicker furniture with waterproof cushions/fabric, is probably your best bet. Stay away from any metal-framed outdoor furniture. Not only can this type of furniture scratch your deck but it can also rust and leave rings where it sits.
2.) Choose a neutral fabric color for your outdoor furniture – It may be tempting to buy brightly colored frames and cushions for your outdoor furniture, but our advice is to look for colors that are neutral (greys, tans, and browns are good options). Color can be added with throw pillows and outdoor rugs. This makes your outdoor space easier to change if you grow tired of the current decor.
3.) Add an outdoor rug – An outdoor rug not only can add a splash of color to your space, but it also offers an indoor feel outdoors, which can make you and your guests feel more relaxed. Outdoor rugs are made of material that more water-resistant. Natural fibers such as Bamboo, sisal, hemp, jute, and seagrass are great options for outdoor rugs.
4.) Designate an eating area – Many deck owners use their deck and a second dining area, especially when food is cooked on the grill. You will probably want to designate a space for eating. You could add an outdoor table with chairs, or you could add a bar area. This will depend on how many people will regularly be eating on your deck.
5.) Ensure there is plenty of shade – Most decks are uncovered to that enjoyment of the sun and air flow is not restricted. However, you will want to add a shaded area for when the sun becomes too bright and hot. An umbrella over your outdoor table is a good idea. If you want a little more shaded space, you could install a pergola with shear curtains, or purchase an over-sized patio umbrella.
6.) Add plants – What better way to add color to your outdoor space than with plants? Brightly colored flowers and other potted greenery will make your space colorful and inviting.
7.) Finish with colorful accents – Give your deck a few finishing touches with a couple colorful pieces. Throw pillows, vases, end tables, and decorative bowls are good ideas. Just remember whatever you put out there will have to weather the wind and rain, unless you plan to bring the pieces in when needed.
