7 Tips for Removing Snow & Ice from your Deck
Keep your Deck Ice-Free and in Top Shape

You invested in a new composite or wood deck over the spring. Now it is winter and you’re wondering how best to remove snow and ice from your deck. We put together a few tips to help you out!
1.If possible, try removing the snow with a soft-bristle push broom (This may not be possible with large snow accumulation).
2.When shoveling your deck do not use a metal shovel – Plastic is ok, rubber tipped is better.
3.Shovel parallel to your deck boards – You will minimize any potential chipping or scratching caused by your shovel.
4.Do not attempt to chip or break ice from the top – Instead, find the edge of the ice. Get your shovel underneath it if you can. Then attempt to pull up on the ice pieces.
5.If you are unable to find an edge to pull up from, try using hot water to break it loose. Try again to pull up with the shovel.
6.Dye-free calcium chloride is your best options to prevent refreezing on your deck. If in doubt, you can contact the manufacturer of your decking material and ask for their recommendations.
7.Frequently brush your ice melt off your deck to minimize scratching. If temperatures reach above freezing and are expected to stay above freezing overnight, you can use a hose to give your deck a quick winter wash.
Following these simple directions will help keep your new wood or maintenance free deck in top shape and ready for spring.
